Documentation/Device setup

For administrators

GPS

Android permissions, GPS tracking schedules, coordinate sending and device checks.

GPS tracking records the Android device's route and sends coordinates to gps.palmorder.com. The administrator sets the schedule, intervals and GPS service account, while the user grants Android location permission.

GPS tracking settings are available on devices with a valid FULL license. The GPS service login and password are entered separately in the GPS settings.

Before setup

  • The device is paired with PalmOrder Server and has received a FULL license.
  • A GPS service account is available for viewing tracks. Contact PalmOrder support for account details.
  • Location services are enabled on the Android device.
  • An internet connection is available for sending coordinates.

The GPS service identifies a device by the syncName assigned during pairing. If you change syncName, check that the device is correctly associated with the GPS service account.

Android permissions and accuracy

  1. Open PalmOrder and go to Settings → GPS tracking.
  2. Turn on Enable GPS tracking and save the settings.
  3. Read the explanation about recording and transmitting location, then grant Android location access while using the app.
  4. If Android offers an accuracy choice, enable Precise location. Precise location permission is required for track recording.
  5. If PalmOrder asks you to enable High accuracy, open location settings and enable the corresponding mode or accuracy improvement option.

Check app permissions under Android settings → Apps → PalmOrder → Permissions → Location. Names depend on the Android version and manufacturer. Android permission help.

Start tracking while PalmOrder is open on screen. Recording then runs through a location service with an ongoing notification and can continue after the app is minimized.

GPS tracking settings

In PalmOrder, open Settings → GPS tracking.

SettingPurpose
Enable GPS trackingEnables route recording according to the schedule.
Block the app when 'High accuracy' is offRequires the corresponding location mode while the GPS schedule is active.
Coordinate saving interval (sec)The interval for requesting track coordinates. Default: 30 seconds.
On, OffThe start and end times according to the device clock.
Login, PasswordGPS service account credentials.
Coordinate sending interval (sec)The interval between attempts to send accumulated coordinates. Default: 60 seconds.
GPS service check interval (min)The interval between scheduled attempts to restart the GPS service. Default: 60 minutes.
Use Internet time instead of GPS/network timeSelects the time source for recorded points.
Send trackManually sends accumulated coordinates and displays the result.
Delete trackDeletes the local file of accumulated coordinates after confirmation. Points not yet sent will also be lost.

Saving and sending intervals are in seconds; the service check interval is in minutes. Actual coordinate frequency also depends on location, movement, signal quality and Android restrictions.

Schedule

For daytime operation, set, for example, On — 08:00, Off — 18:00.

If the start and end times are identical, tracking has no time limit. An interval crossing midnight is also supported, such as 22:00–06:00.

Schedule changes apply after saving. If tracking is enabled outside the scheduled period, it waits for the next period to begin.

Send and view a track

The app accumulates coordinates on the device and periodically sends them to the GPS service. For automatic sending, enter the login and password and set a positive sending interval. A value of 0 disables periodic sending.

Without internet access, points remain stored locally for later sending. To check the connection, use Send track and read the server response.

After sending, open gps.palmorder.com, sign in and check the required device's track for the relevant day. Select the device by its current syncName.

If document exchange works but coordinates do not arrive, check the GPS service settings and location permission. The GPS login and password are stored in the GPS tracking section.

After minimizing or restarting

After enabling tracking, minimize PalmOrder and check for new points. The location service must remain running on the device.

Android can restrict starting the GPS service when the app is closed, and the device manufacturer may impose further battery-saving restrictions. If tracking does not resume after a reboot or stop, open PalmOrder, check permission and save the enabled GPS settings during the scheduled period.

The service check setting schedules recovery attempts. Android rules also determine whether such a start is allowed. Verify track recording on the actual device models used for work.

Document coordinates

When GPS tracking is enabled, saving a document can add a point with document details to the track. Coordinates can also be recorded in the latitude and longitude fields of documents that support them.

Location freshness and accuracy are checked for document coordinates. A route on the map alone does not guarantee that these fields are populated in every document.

Document fields and transfer to the accounting system are described in Document schemas and Documents from devices.

Remote settings

The schedule, intervals and account can be sent through the gps-tracking section of preferences.xml. The integrator prepares the file and places it in the device's outbox.

<gps-tracking>
  <enabled>true</enabled>
  <required>false</required>
  <interval>30</interval>
  <on>08:00</on>
  <off>18:00</off>
  <send-interval>60</send-interval>
  <service-check-interval>60</service-check-interval>
</gps-tracking>

Place this fragment inside <preferences>. The example changes the schedule and intervals while preserving the login and password already entered on the device. The user grants Android location permission on the device.

For the full parameter list and download procedure, see Remote settings.

Initial check

  1. Check the FULL license, current syncName, precise location permission and enabled Android location services.
  2. Set a schedule covering the current time and enter the GPS service login and password.
  3. Enable tracking and save the settings while keeping PalmOrder open.
  4. Check recording while moving, including after minimizing the app.
  5. Run Send track and check the response.
  6. Make sure the GPS service shows the points for the correct device and date.

If coordinates do not appear

SymptomWhat to check
GPS tracking settings are unavailableThe device's valid FULL license.
Tracking is enabled but the service is not runningPrecise location permission, Android location services, schedule and starting with the app open.
Points appear only while the app is openService operation after minimizing and device battery or background restrictions.
No points indoorsLocation signal quality. Repeat the check outdoors.
Manual sending reports a missing track fileWhether recording has started and whether the track was just sent or deleted.
Sending failsInternet access, login, password and the exact GPS service response.
Sending succeeds but expected points are absent from the mapAccount, device identified by syncName, selected date and Android device time.

For support, prepare the Android version and device model, PalmOrder version, syncName, time of the issue and response to Send track. Do not include the account password in the support message.
